Alternative Service Breaks (ASBs) are service learning experiences that take place over breaks in the academic year where students participate in an affordable trip to a city within the United States and are immersed in a social topic. This service learning experience starts before the trip departs Louisville and continues long after the student returns home.
The Engage Lead Serve Board houses this branch of service known as the Alternative Service Break (ASB) program to bring students together to challenge themselves and develop as leaders while helping others in communities across the U.S. By engaging students in hands-on direct service, ASBs allow individuals to reflect on the impact they can have on communities. The idea of ASB places a heavy emphasis on critical thinking and reflection, turning a passion for volunteering and service learning into a lifelong commitment to civic engagement.
We strive to give all students an opportunity to experience Alternative Service Break (ASB) regardless of financial limitations. Funding raised for ASB will support students by helping cover the cost of a modest housing arrangement, transportation, meals, and potential funding of the service projects in the destination city. Your contribution will afford the students an opportunity to establish their role as an active citizen in the community they serve and the lives of those around them.
